Newcastle is well known for having some incredibly talented local artists and embracing inclusivity to allow everyone to experience art. The murals around the city and its surrounds are an example of this, and they have positively changed the landscape of this place we’re lucky enough to call home.
Greek philosopher Aristotle said, ‘The purpose of art is to represent the meaning of things. This represents the true reality, not external aspects’. Telling a story and bringing life to the streets in turn creates a thriving community where people are able to express themselves and appreciate the arts. We are privileged to have such talented local artists like as Mitch Revs, Jarrod Lucky, Goyatorres, and of course, Trevor Dickinson.
In 2008, a project called “Renew Newcastle” commenced, inviting and supporting creativities to rejuvenate the struggling former steel town. Since then, Newcastle’s cultural regeneration has been ongoing, and street art has played a big part in it. Inspired by the success in Newcastle, other communities have introduced activation projects which lead to the establishment of “Renew Australia”.
Laneways, fences, factory exteriors, some commissioned and some impulsively created, have all become part of the urban canvas which is now Newcastle’s Street Art.
